The Trigon 1750

To the best of my knowledge the Trigon is the worlds most powerful caplamp in production at 1750 lumens output. This is greater than the Scurrion 1500s 1450 lumens albeit for a fraction of the price. It is beaten only by my own MagnumStar series of lamps.

Unfortunately, demand currently exceeds supply, but I am working on this.

This is possibly the most useful and versatile lamp of all our range. It combines enormous power with a size and weight that is acceptable to most people. A remarkable feature of this lamp is its standard 'walking mode' which outputs well over 150 lumens for a draw of 1.2 watts on the battery. Regardless of this, the light output is a very broad 'soft' illumination that does not dazzle other people. I have been flashed across the eyes with this and was not blinded. A truly remarkable lamp. A standard 4 cell helmet mount power pack will give 30 hours illumination at this setting.

Cree Technology

Cree Inc introduce a new generation of high efficiency LED emitters:

"CREE Breaks 200 Lumen per Watt Barrier

Cree have announced a reported laboratory efficacy record of 208 lumens per Watt; surpassing a significant milestone in the solid state lighting industry and demonstrating Cree’s relentless drive to improve the performance of its LEDs.

The results were measured under standard LED test conditions at a drive current of 350mA at room temperature. "

These new R5 XP-G and XM-L emitters are used in the the Trigon.

Now with New Technology (NT)

  • Lighter weight
  • Lower form factor
  • 40% more efficiency in heat dissipation
  • Sleeker, more attractive appearance.
  • Easy replacement of external components
  • Low battery warning

A noticeable feature of this lamp is the ‘binocular’ reflector; this provides excellent optics for the 2 XM-Ls behind it. There is an obvious third emitter in the form of 2 bare Cree XP-Gs mounted 'tandem' against the glass on the same heat sink pedestal.

This lamp runs on my 8V battery series so can be connected to either a 4 cell helmet pack, a 4 cell belt mount pack, or the blue10 cell belt pack.

The Oldham switch has been modified to give extra positions, but unlike the MagnumStar is free to rotate in either direction just like the original Oldham. I will explain how this works.

Obviously, whichever circuit comes on line first is arbitrary, so for the sake of argument say it’s the twin XM-Ls behind the 'binocular' reflector. We shall call this SW1. Turning them on and off will switch between 3 modes, standard, high, and turbo.

SW1

#1 Standard is the normal 'walking mode' and is what a user should have the lamp set to for general use and maximum economy. The twin XM-L LEDs are driven at 130 mA to produce the output of 130 lumens. A 4 cell power pack will give about 40 hours light on this setting.

#2 High is the mode for exploration of large roomy slate mine chambers and caves or mines where a high output is desirable.  The twin XM-L LEDs are driven at 1000mA to produce the output of 750 lumens.

#3 Turbo is the mode for full illumination of large roomy slate mine chambers and caves or mines where a high output is desirable for looking up into high stopes or avens.  The twin XM-L LEDs are driven at 2750 mA to produce the output of 1750 lumens. All this light is in the form of a wide controlled beam which makes it similar to car headlamps on main.

SW2

This will illuminate the tandem mounted bare Cree XP-Gs to give a 'Daylight Mode' of 920 lumens. To see this underground is stunning, it will greatly enhance your underground experience. It is eminently suitable for photography where a beam is undesirable.

SW3

This will illuminate the Emergency Light and activate the low battery warning. Emergency light has an output of possibly 60% of that of miners lamps but with a wider but clearly defined beam. The drive current is 60 mA and a 4 cell power pack would give about 3 and half days light. It is also ideal for chatting in company. There is easily enough light to get you out of anywhere. If a power pack switches off due to going flat you can turn to this setting and get a dim light, switching it off and then on after a few minutes will give you its full power for several hours.

The low battery warning is in the form of a bright red LED. Turning to this setting will cause the red LED to flicker when the battery is down to about 7 volts, lower still it will burn continuously. You can see the red LED by shining your lamp at a reflective surface, or your had as below.

The lamp can be recharged from a vehicle with suitable adaptor

Test Figures

Temperature at full power, inside the lamp and tested indoors. Maxed out at 75 degrees C after 20 minutes.

Light output in lumens is MINIMUM figure, see "Cree Technology" above

Table is estimated figures, but accurate regarding standard light setting and emergency light. Deduct 10% approx upwards due to voltage drop of cells on load. The Lithium Ion cells will switch off at 5.6 volts to protect the cells.
