About Me
Societies

The following societies all suffer me as a member:

Northern Mine Research Society

Membership of this society carries an excellent newsletter, and annual subscription to British Mining. This is an excellent publication, and repays the annual membership.

Peak District Mines Historical Society

Again, the annual membership is more than repaid by the value of the bulletin. The thing to remember about "PUDUMS" is that the scope of the societies activities and interests is NOT restricted to the Peak District. The bulletin often contains articles about areas as far a field as India!

Shropshire Caving and Mining Club

This society produces a quarterly newsletter, "Below" as well as an annual journal. The newsletter is far more than its description suggests, running to many pages and containing in-depth articles by people such as Dr Ivor Brown. This is the society that controls the access to Snailbeach Lead Mine, Shropshire.

West Cumberland Mine Research Group

This is the society responsible for pushing most of the new ground at Nenthead, although this is down to a small group of activists. If you are interested in Nenthead, this clubs journal is where you will read about what's new underground; first.

Mines of Lakeland Exploration Society

This society is somewhat different as it is run almost autonomously by Ian Tyler its chairman, although there is a committee. Due to Ian's Direction, proper access arrangements have been made to many of the Lake Districts old mines. This was only achieved by the club showing determination to carry out the activity that it was created for. Ian is also the author of several books, and has, in my opinion, a unique style of writing. Basically, he brings mining history to life, this makes all of Ian's books very readable.

Carn Brea Mining Society

Their journal is useful to up country folk for keeping abreast of what's going on down in the south west.

North Pennine Heritage Trust

These are the people responsible for the brilliant restoration of the mining remains at Nenthead, and other places. Membership is only about a fiver, and every bit helps. They run the Nenthead Heritage Centre.

Welsh Mines Society

Very close to home and close to my heart. Although basically not an underground exploration society, there is an unofficial offshoot "underground projects group" involving yours truly. They have two weekend field meets a year with a dinner on the Saturday evening, events I never miss. The newsletter is packed with interesting info with quite a bit by acknowledged experts Simon Hughes, George Hall, Harold Morris etc. The popularity of this society is reflected in its ever increasing membership.
